We are grassroots, high-impact environmental not-for-profit charity creating tangible results in the long-term rehabilitation of native habitat for endangered species. We are a registered environmental organisation with deductible gift recipient (DGR) status dedicated to restoring koala habitat, planting hope on a game-changing scale across the Northern Rivers of New South Wales.
With a mission to create a wildlife corridor across the Northern Rivers of New South Wales, creating and connecting vital habitat in strategic locations benefitting koalas and other native flora and fauna. The aim of the corridor is to allow koalas to live and move around safely, reducing the main threats they face from decades’ worth of habitat loss, from disease to deforestation to dog attacks and fatal vehicle strikes.
Bangalow Koalas individual projects form part of our greater mission to plant a wildlife corridor across the Northern Rivers region and beyond. Our executive team has been discussing potential for Bangalow Koalas to take to the road, teaching, and inspiring others to create similar movements in their regions. This is one of our future hopes for the model of implementation that Bangalow Koalas has developed. It is a long-term goal to be able to mentor other groups in the hope that similar projects to Bangalow can be conducted nationally and even globally.
Our short-term goal is to plant 500,000 trees by the end of 2025 and is called the 500,000 Reasons for Hope project. Hope for koalas and other threatened species, hope for the planet and in the face of climate change, hope for the mental health and well-being of our younger generation.
Spanning 161 plantings across 121 properties in 7 local shires, this community-driven initiative has become one of the region’s most impactful conservation efforts. With just 15,000 trees remaining to hit the half-a-million milestone, Bangalow Koalas is calling on individuals, communities, donors and corporate sponsors to help us cross the finish line.
Our long-term goal is to plant a minimum of 750,000 up to 1million trees by the end of 2030. The only thing preventing this will be lack of funding as we have the support of the community, landholders, community groups, Indigenous Rangers, bush regenerators, NGO’s, and local, state, and federal government agencies.
“We set out with a bold vision—to create a connected corridor of habitat to protect the future of our precious koalas,” said Linda Sparrow, President of Bangalow Koalas. “This isn’t just about planting trees; it’s about planting hope. With the support of local landholders, volunteers, and donors, we’ve created a grassroots movement that’s regenerating the land and bringing back the wildlife.”
To complete the final stretch for 2025, Bangalow Koalas has relaunched its GoFundMe campaign and is actively seeking corporate sponsors and donors who want to be part of a tangible, legacy for Australia’s iconic koalas and native ecosystems.
Our social media reach is strong, and we collaborate regularly with leading environmental organisations like WWF, IFAW, One Tree Planted, Wedgetail Foundation, Wires, Landcare to name a few. We also work closely with local, state and federal government agencies and several Indigenous Ranger groups.
We are reaching a market both locally, nationally and globally with media from UK The Guardian, Reuters and Yahoo News running stories on our work to name a few.
